Hit the Rock near my home. First fish was a smallie in the 14-15" range. Great fight on the UL gear. Almost lost it twice as it dove into a weed bed. It had 2 companions that followed it as it fought that were the same size. Worked up river and caught a couple more and a sunnie. Lots of barren areas but I found some great looking water that on my way back I spotted several smallies in the same size class.
First time through an area is more about discovery then catching a lot of fish. That's because you'll be on top of a good spot before you know the lay of it. Then its usually too late. But next time you know.
As usual I was throughing a micro jig.

Jon
when you say micro jig is that the brand name or the size. I found something called a micro jig which looked like a wooley bugger with a jig head, is that it?

Pete, a micro jig is simply a small jighead. I mostly use 1/32 to 1/16 oz. and it doesn't matter if they're painted or not. Most of mine are unpainted. I put small panfish and crappie plastics on it. I like 1" tubes the most. I also use crawfish, paddle & curly tails. You can buy a lifetime supply from Cabelas or Bass Pro in their panfish assortments.

The great thing about micros is you catch everything, including larger fish. The pike I got on Sunday took a 2" white curlytail. The smallies yesterday took a white tube.
