I took a walk through the camping area at Floyd Bennett recently. Following is a basic description for those planning to camp.

The campground is located directly adjacent to the tournament launch lot.
Technically it is two campgrounds (Tamarak and Goldenrod I believe), but they are connected. One entrance path (Tamarak) is directly apposite the launch lot, next to the restrooms. The other entrance (Goldenrod) is on the left side at the end as you drive the main tarmac(runway) directly towards the launch lot.

These campgrounds consist of a main grassy field area along with small nooks for individual sites. There are a few firepits scattered about, along with 2 picnic tables under a roof. I don’t believe there is any plumbing at the site or the restrooms, but forgot to check. The grounds are quite nice actually – you are only steps away from the tarmacs, but the campground itself is secluded quite well by the local foliage.

Car camping. – It does not seem that you are allowed to drive cars into the actual campgrounds – but it is just steps away from both entrances. Those planning to car-camp OR those with Campers should park next to the Goldenrod entrance as there is a grassy area with room for cars, and it’s right next the campgrounds. Or, park at the launch in the parking lot. (Assuming this will be allowed.)

Kayak transport– For those camping, you can either leave kayaks on the cars or easily wheel them into the campsite.
If you plan to camp and walk a kayak over to the launch, it’s basically the distance of the parking lot next to launch. But, for those who have been there you know – it’s a very large lot. Not that long of a walk, but you need kayak wheels.

Is it free without permit to camp during the tournament? Joe posted previously on another thread that it will be free, so unless something has changed – I assume it is.

Also, you do not need a seasonal car-top launch permit during tournament weekend.

FeedingFrenzy:
thanks for a most imformative post. That's the kind of stuff that makes this forum great! I didn't get a chance to check it out last year. I'll be tent camping, and I'll bring a Coleman stove and cooler for foodstuff.

Last year the CG was full with boy scouts so we ended up in the corner of the parking lot. It was ok, but not prime. Hoping to be there late Saturday and leaving monday am....I think. Scott

I don't know Scott...its all about location, location, location. I kind of liked the area we were in last year. A thick enough air mattress and you couldn't feel the rocks and asphalt. A good set of ear plugs and the helicopters landing 100 feet away didn't really wake me up for long. But then there was the snoring coming from a green van next to my tent. http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I was kinda hoping we would be allowed to return to the old digs if we chose.

Joey, will we be allowed to camp in last years area if we are crazy enough to do so? http://www.kayakfishingstuff.com/images/maps/cookoo.gif Heading down Thursday morning and back this way Sunday afternoon.

Scott...if that is some Latin or Medical term meaning "farting in your sleep" http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif, I just may be guilty. There was a lot of good food going around before we hit the sack. Besides, I forgot my muffler at home. http://www.kayakfishingstuff.com/images/maps/busted2.gif
