My 2nd post, I'm on a roll. After looking at many waterproof storage bags costing upward of $40, I decided the money would be better spent on lures and rigging my new kayak. I grabbed a handful of pretzels and BAM! there it was. My water proof storage and I already owned it. The large discount chains sell them as does COSTCO, clear plastic jugs full of pretzels . Fits nicely in the front of my Tarpon 120 and can also be used for a bank, aquarium etc.

Cheers,
Kurt

You have it figured out.

I use a similar plastic jar, plus TWO plastic tubs from OSH that fit *perfectly* in my FnD and hold thermos, food, clothing etc. plus two dry bags from WalMart for more clothing and emergency items and a huge ($15) drybag for keeping fish on ice.

All cheap and cheerfull. All better than the expensive stuff sold for what I'm doing.

I like zip-lock freezer bags for that job. Can't get much cheaper than that.

Someday God will explain the universe to me ... while I'm waiting I'll go fishing

For larger items - say a change of clothes - I found LARGE Ziplock bags at PepBoys. They are about 12 gallon size and hold like 30#. 3 to a pack for about $6-$8.

I've been pushing similar jugs from Wally World's housewares department. They're made by Rubbermaid and come in round or square shapes. The square ones when bungied into a corner of a milk crate can be opened and closed without spinning and therefore without removing it from the crate. They cost about $2.50 each. They are specifically made to hold liquid in. It would stand to reason that they would work equally well at keeping liquid out. I'll have to fill one half way with gravel one day, sink it and see how it fares. So far I can report they're definitely rain proof.

kcarlesen,

I have a friend who ussed the jar in the picture. He said that water did get inside, so don't count on th jug protecting you radio etc. If you ever rolled you yak you know that water gets into almost everything. I currently keep my radio and safety equipment indise a Coleman jug (it has a screw on cap and is the type you would put Koolaid in) it is very durable and it has a better seal that the jug pictured. I won't know for sure if it will keep my stuff dry untill I roll my yak again. I zipped locked my radio as an extra percaution. I agree with you that the dry bags are expensive and don"t work.

Look into buying some silica gel packets to absorb the moisture; I think the ratio is 1 packet to a pint, so if you have a gallon container, you will need ..?.. a zillion of them!
