Is it just me or do y'all butt's get numb after a few hours?

I use the Seattle Sports seat that fills with air on one of my boats and the Ocean Kayaks Gel Pad Seat on another. In the pirogue I put an ole fashioned boat cushion on the floor and paddle the pirogue backwards. All three boats leave me with NumbButtSyndrome after a few hours and one leg will sometimes "go to sleep". My butt hasn't hurt this much since I was in prison.

I don't recall suffering like this with a canoe where the seat is higher. Is this just something we have to deal with because we sit so low or am I just totally out of shape?

Yakkie - I was wondering the same thing. After 3 to 3.5 hours my buttski begins to ache. Have tried fishing sidesaddle and that helps delay the ache. Use the standard Ocean Kayak seat. Do cushions help?

I pick places where I can pull over and get out.

Yea, I do that too. I'll find lil grass clumps, pull up on them and stand for a while but sometimes it's not possible. For example, while fishing the Gulf or Lake Ponchartrain.

I don't know if this is relavent, but my ass is a bit big and I don't have much problem sitting on a cushioned yak seat for up to 7 - 8 hours of fishing. Don't mean to be so personal, but do you guys have small asses that don't have much "meat/fat" like me???? This may be your problem. If figured god gave me a "cuchy" ass so I can yak long! Just a thought!!!!

I just may be way off line with this one also. You may also want to try to take a couple Tylenol pack pain medicine before you go out, it will give you some relief. With my back problems, I'm pretty much dopped up on Percocets anyway, maybe that is why I can sit and fish so long, "I can't feel a thing". Who knows.

"May the seat be with you!"

I toss a regular vinyl-covered throwable boat cushion on my yak seat and it's pretty comfy on the ol' derriere. But I too like to paddle on over to the shallows and get out for a stretch every now and then. I'm pretty sure that drinking a few beers helps too...at least I hope it does!

If you're in an SOT, try sitting side saddle for a bit to change position. 3 hours is a pretty good chunk of time and I'm usually ready tog et out and stretch a bit to get the knees working again. Scott

I tried to get some of the guys at paddlepalooza to feel my butt to see if it was numb but they wouldn't.

I'm convinced that if you sit on anything for 4 to 5 + hours that your ass is going to hurt. I think that the only thing that helps is gettin up and moving around, or catching alot of fish. There was a whole lot of ass hurtin' at Paddlepalooza!

Paul, I don't think you asked unc to feel your ass-you would have been sporting a nice shiner if you had.....

I had the same problems you have. I could not believe the amount of pain that can radiate from my arse!!! The Sports Seat is really nice, but in the end (no pun intended) it's still filled with foam and it offers some resistance to your bum... If you are of slight build, you might try the inflatable pillows used in camping. They cost anywhere from a few dollars up to $7. The risk is that you weigh too much and you pop a seam, but it is by far more comfortable than the self inflating foam pillow I currently use. I had suggested this a couple of years ago and it was probably the best suggestion I ever made. The secret to its use is not to over inflate it. Just put enough air in it so that both cheeks are not touching the hull. When you lean over to one side, then one cheek should touch the hull.

When I used this pillow this way, I spent 10 hours out on the water and not a peep out of my butt. http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif Well, OK maybe just one little one! http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

right, one little peep....thought it was a german U boat diving...AOOOOOOOOGA!!!!! http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I found the little black pads that jon sells that inflate with air to be very comfortable. More than I actually thought it would. Used it in the everglades and was comfy for long periods of time. Scott

On my Extreme, I find the baitwell in place behind my seat adds back support. I have also found that the baitwell makes a nice place to lay your head and take a nap when fishing is slow.

Speaking of back support... laugh if you want too... Between the pouch and back on the Seattle Sports Seat I put a poly cutting board that stiffed the back up real nice.

I have a few of the inflatable camping pilllows. I'll have to dig them out of mothballs and give them a try again. Probably wouldn't hurt to hit the ole treadmill if I can find a place to put all the clothes that currently occupy it.

BTW... 5'9" @ 180 lbs w/ 34" waist. Happy medium but I'm in horrible shape. I get out of breath just brushing my teeth. Took my weekly shower last night and I have sore muscles today! I wonder how much my lack of conditioning has to do with this problem. Any well conditioned folks suffer from dead-ass-syndrome?

Other BTW... Eddie ain't lying. We had to wake him up one day while he was napping on his yak.

Thanks for the help.
