Reports starting to come in of some limited action on bloodworms.

Otterboy- are you getting ready? Checked out the access to the DOD site and it looks good. If I remember right, the last week of April, first week of May will be very hot, catch and release fishing. Maybe we can get a few guys for the S. New Jersey, Phila area to join us.

Am getting my stuff ready to go. I was in Costa Rica the week before last and caught a few sailfish and a big Marlin in Quepos. I now have the fever.

Good to be back on the board. Here's the regs. and a local report from the Bridgeton News.

Striped Bass Season

The closed seasons for striped bass are: January 1 through February 28 in all waters except the Atlantic Ocean from 0-3 miles offshore; and April 1 through May 31 in the Delaware River and its tributaries from the Route 1 Bridge in Trenton downstream to and including the Salem River and its tributaries. Any striped bass caught during a closed season must be released immediately. The possession or killing of a striped bass during a closed season is a violation of the law and will result in prosecution.

Also note that fishermen may possess one additional striped bass per day under the Striped Bass Bonus Fish Program subject to the following: 1) the angler must apply for and receive a fish possession card in advance of attempting to take a bonus fish; and 2) the minimum size limit for a striped bass taken under the bonus program is 28 inches. For more information on the bonus program, call 609-748-2020.

Also found this in a local paper.

Last year's bass regulations still in use, for now

Thursday, March 11, 2004

Good news. New Jersey anglers will be able to continue to fish for striped bass under last year's regulations.

According to Tom Fote, of the Jersey Coast Anglers Association, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) Striped Bass Board decided the New Jersey proposal needs to go to the Striped Bass Technical Committee to be reviewed and sent back to the ASMFC Striped Bass Board.

The board meets in May, and still has not committed to address the problem of what producer status for the Delaware Bay and Hudson River means. Therefore, no changes are expected before that date.

Many of the surf fishermen will see an abundance of slot fish during the spring run in Delaware Bay and many other striper spots throughout the state. It is hoped that the ASMFC will allow the taking of slot fish throughout the year and many of the party and charter boats throughout New Jersey will have this size bass in the coolers every day.

The striper action has picked up in Delaware Bay and in Great Bay. Scotty of Scott's B&T in Mystic Islands, informed us the first-keeper bass, a 28-incher, was beached last Saturday. Sunday saw a slow pick of stripers. All came on bloodworms and Scotty also noted many fishermen have been out giving it a try. The weather since the weekend has not been the most enjoyable, however.

Hey Guys, let me know when you go out. I live in Philly right outside of Bensalem. I heard of a few stripers already being caught in the bristol area on bloodworms.

Took a ride a lunch today to the river. 5 guys on the shore, 1 small boat, fishing just below the Commodore Barry Bridge. Saw a 30" fish on a stringer.(legal until April 1, then it is all catch and release) Reports that the boat had landed a few. All on bloodworms.
I will try to get out Sunday afternoon. Low tide @ 1:08pm. High tide @ Racoon creek @ 6:29pm on Sunday.

Surf Prowler, Marko, BillW,

Picking up my Prowler from JonS this Sat. I'm an experienced Surf and Jetty angler and have spent 10 years or more canoeing but never fished from a Kayak.

I live in Chester County PA about 35 minutes west of Phila. I would be interested in hooking up for a trip in late April/May.

Let me know.

MikeD,

When you are ready let me know. There will be a lot of fish in the river end of April, beginning of May. I'll show you the good launch sites that I have found just below the Commodor Barry bridge.
I'm heading out this Sunday afternoon, weather permitting. Hopefully I will have a good post here on Monday with the results that I anticipate. http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Gentlemen, glad to hear everyone is emerging from their Winter slumber!! And here you are talking about my favorite place to fish. Surf Prowler, good to hear from you again, sounds like you have the itch!! I plan on hitting the DOD spot this Spring, I also found a marina just over the Com Barry that looks like it would provide good access to the various structure under the bridge. We should get a few guys together to chase some line-siders!! Email me anytime. I may head out next weekend. -O'boy

Gannet,
Take 130 S. about 4 miles below Commodore Barry bridge. Just past the former Army? base on your right is the DOD entrance. Its a dirt road. Stay on the well traveled path to the left. It eventually leads right to the river. Will take a few minutes to get to the river due to road conditions.(They even had a porta poddy last year.) Plenty of parking and a very short drag to the river. Should be plenty of fishermen on the banks.
Once you launch, go upstream 1/4 mile to the jetty on your right. That whole area is very productive during the spring spawning run. Locals call the area " valley of the giants."
Its all catch and release after 4/1/04. Last year took a 35lb fish .

Bill W,
Keep us informed of the temps in Sandy Hook. I was real impressed with all your secret spots last year. Its a great area to fish and I'd like to join you this year.

I'm sure a T&W will work here. This early in the season I like to drift a high-low rig. I have this fantasy of catching 2 stripers at the same time in my Yak. It hasn't happened yet but I'll keep trying.
