The back part [Bay] of the river held very large fluke in the summers. A long gone news paper The Newark Evening News had a fishing writer Schaffer forgot his first name, My father knew him and we would fish on his boat in the Bay,river,and outside, Spring bought nice fat winter flounder, all you wanted.they even thought they were the same school that would return each year, with them were White perch. and Striped Bass, The flounder were replaced with Fluke, Smaller Striped Bass.Blues,then Snapper Blues,a White perch now and then, along with Spots- Laffietts[?]and the ever present Burgals ,Claming was great the inlet held Seabass,Blackfish,Albies,Shad,Herring,Crabbing was also very good, as fall entered into winter you were back with the returning flounder till Ice Up, As the years passed The Island was Developed with apartments more boat slips ,housing along the shore line Plus Silt and along came pollution, over fishing, ups and downs with fish numbers, today Just about the same routien ,with less fish,its cleaned up some and becomes under heavy fishing pressure all Year with seasons, Limits both size and numbers, If you were to visit the Jettys in the summer you would see a big mix of people who never throw anything back ,but some will throw back the Star fish Not many.week days are ok but week ends its Combat Fishing, the suff very early Morning or evening is good to sometimes great, The beach is for beach goers with beach badges the rest of the day.A fishing pier is a club "Private" no fishing there any more mostly weddings "Catering", So it goes its not as good as it once was but still Good, Oh and all the Commercial Fishing boats have been pushed out by high rent even some Head [Party] Boats have had to move the town runs the Marinea.
