Looking for advice on my first kayak. The local Academy sports & outdoors has a Mainstream Kingfish 12' for sale for 399.99. This looks like the best choice i have available. Any feedback concerning fishing with this kayak in south La coastal areas is appreciated. I will be fishing the areas around fouchon, golden meadows, port sulfer and manchac. I also get down to the florida keys a couple of times a year. I'm ready to buy as soon as i get some advice. Thanks http://amos.shop.com/amos/cc/main/catalog/pcd/10430416/ccsyn/260/_x_/BoatersWorld-com-Mainstream-Kayak-Kingfish-Sit-on-Top-Kayak-Smoke

How about looking at Massey's here in Metairie, Pack and Paddle in Lafayette,, The Backpacker in Baton Rouge. I to am looking for a kayak but it won't be from Academy, I am sure there are better boats than the one your looking at for not much more cost.

I am going to look into used. The backpacker has a nice selection of yaks and canoes. I am not sure if they have used ones now, but I have seen used ones there before. Last time I asked they let you "rent" them for some dough, and then the rental fee is applied trowards the purchase of the yak you buy. Now i am not sure if this is exactly the policy, but its in this ballpark.Link (http://www.backpackerbr.com)

If you buy one for fishing keep this in mind. You are going to need a place to put your stuff. There are a bunch of yaks out there now which are designed for fishing. I have a Wilderness Systems Tarpon 140 which I purchased from the Back Packer in Baton Rouge. Another popular choice are the Ocean Kayak line specifically the Proler. Look for a tank well option as well as one that is sit on top. The tank well allows you to customize a milk crate to handle your gear. Mine carries 4 rods and reels as well as my tackle. Just a suggestion.
I looked at the link after I wrote all of the above and it looks like a fine yak. Appears that the seat is located high on the yak which may cause you to lose some stability but it will help with fishing. I'm not familar with the maker but I really don't get caught up in all of that. Welcome to the sport.
