was looking thru craiglist and found this kayak. http://bham.craigslist.org/boa/711191356.html
What would a kayak like this cost to actual make and how well would one like this handle in water? Do not know if this is handmade but it would be a work of art and looks like it would be fun to actual make.

Check out Chesapeake Light Craft's website. Kits are $700 - $1,200, and include precut wood and everything else you need except the tools. A boat like the one you showed takes about 100 hours of labor to build, according to CLC. Beautiful boats!! As soon as my home improvements get farther along, I plan on building one. BTW they are very light too. A 17 footer weighs around 45 lbs.

100 hours if you are an experienced boat builder with a ton of clamps. The hull is stitch and glue while the deck is strips. There is quite a bit of fancy work which takes more time. An all stitch and glue takes 80 to 100 hours. An all strip takes about 300 hours depending on how artistic you get. Most people over glass the 1st boat (dont ask) and they come out on the heavy side. Properly done they should weigh in at about 40 lbs uless you go for expedition strength then its in the 50 lb class. I have seen some in the 70 lb range which is way over done. Usually over glassed and way too much resin. There are several good builder websites with a lot of good advice.
