Fellow Kayak Flyfishers,

I just got a small taste of what you saltwater guys call the "Nantucket Sleigh Ride". I caught a 10 pound largemouth bass from a local freshwater farm pond here in Ontario. On a five wt. rod with six pound tippet at 1:30 in the afternoon the fish was quite a surprise. Usually the only action you get from these big bass is when they try to inhale whatever small bass or sunfish you just hooked. But this fish leisurely sucked in my wooly bugger and the battle was on. What a blast to be towed around by such a fish.

What a catch! A 10 lb any-fish is a good fish let alone on the light wand. Congrats on the fine catch and I'm sure you be taking the ride again. Down here some nice fish take the smallest of flys, I'm not suprised, keep us informed. So let's see, if you head to Prince William Island, take a lobster boat out and then have em drop you off with your kayak. Then troll around with a nice big herring fly and hook one of thoes giant bluefin AND HANG ON.....oh yea...have a marine radio on board and a passport! http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Sit back and enjoy the ride!

That's a huge bass for that far north. I'd love to have seen a pic of the beast.

Fortunately I'm an artificials-only guy so I never have to catch bait that big.

As my grandfather taught me, the best time to fish is when you can.

Fellow Yakkers,

To answer the queries about pictures of the big bass. I posted this on another board under the heading "Murphy's Law".

"Fellow Flyfishers,

Here's some timely advice from an unhappy camper. I got a new digital camera this year and usually have it with me on all my fishing jaunts. Last week my brother and I were out on a local farm pond which contains some lunker bass. I had my camera at the ready and was rowing and guiding my brother as he presented his offerings to the fish. We were on the pond in prime time at dusk. Nothing of significance was caught.

The next day I slept in, anticipating fishing late the next evening. After a leisurely lunch I prepared to take my kayak into the pond in search of an afternoon's sport. I took up my camera and then put it back down on the car seat thinking, "Nah, I'll only catch "dinks" at this time of the day." Well of course thanks to good ol' Murphy I caught the bass of a lifetime on my 5 wt. with a buoyant wooly bugger and 6 pound tippet. The fish was 24" long and had a depth of 8" and was surely well over 10 pounds in weight. The fish was strong enough to give me the "Nantucket Sleigh Ride".
Moral of the story: Always take your camera! (Murphy says so!)

Here's a picture of one of those lunkers following me around while I was tubing. These big fish are just waiting for you to hook a smaller fish and then they swallow the smaller fish in one gulp. The big white thing in the picture is my fin which is about 2 feet long.

Great pic and that's funny about the bass. Wish I had a place like that here. How far are you from NJ? http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I read an article one time about a lake in Indiana. They called it the hatch. A bunch of fly fishers would show up the day the lake stocked rainbow trout. The big bass would come out and a feedy frenzy would ensue and the fishermen in their float tubes and large rainbow trout flies would have incredible fishing for that one day. The rest of the year the bass were uncooperative.

Jon,

I live in Southern Ontario close enough to Toronto to be a dedicated fan of the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs. We used to be a dynasty when I was young. Now you guys in Jersey are taking over. I have a friend who visits the Rhode Island area every summer. How far are you from there? I hope to go there with him some time with my kayak on top of the car and experience some of your saltwater kayak fishing. What kind of licences are required for non residents in "the salt"?
Don

I'm app. 2.5 hours from Rhody. When you go let us know and we'll try hook up.

There aren't any licences or permits required to fish the salt in most states and all of the New England states are free.
