Does anyone know if the D rings that come attached to a rubber patch can be added to a plastic boat? I see these all the time in the whitewater catalogues as they are meant for inflatable rafts. This would solve the problem of adding fasteners to the inside of the boats for flotation bulkheads, keeper cords, etc...

Thanks BillW. I'm going to make the sacrifice and try to adhere one of these D ring patches with LEXEL. I'll do it inside the rear hatch on my PUNGO140 so it won't be a problem if it doesn't work. All I'll have to do is scrape off the sealant and no one will ever know I tried and failed. Oh, except you! http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Thanks again.

I would think that contact cement might be the best stuff to use. That's what I'd try first.

RussK - No. NY. But you'd never know the difference driving through. http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I'll change my profile to say NY. I thought it did.

JONS - OK. Thanks. I'll give it a try.

Well, I ordered D ring patches, PVC I think, and a bottle of VYNABOND. I found a web site that actually advertised these items for use on plastic boats. I think the VYNABOND is a contact cement as Jon mentioned.

The plan is to install two on the underside of the bow just above the ends of the footrest rails on each side. Then I can attach some sort of netting to the rails and the D rings to form a flotation bulkhead. A few extra beach balls to go with the flotation bag I already have and I should be unsinkable. I hope.

I'll post how this all works out when they're installed and I've filled the boat with water. Thanks for all the advice.

FYI

The SASCO Co that makes LEXEL sent me a reply to my question about Lexel as an adhesive onplastic boats:

Ralph,

Got your request. Lexel should bond fairly well to each of those surfaces. Definitely sand the polyethylene to give a larger surface for the Lexel to ‘wet out’ and bond to. If the rubber is EPDM rubber, you run a little risk of the solvents in Lexel warping (but not dissolving) the rubber as they migrate out of the film. My best suggestion is to test some Lexel yourself under your conditions before trying it on a larger scale. If you would like a tube or two to run a test, let me know and we’ll ship you out a free sample. The one drawback I see is that we manufacture Lexel using rubber that is a little softer than your average adhesive, because we want the material to flex with the movement in a joint, so it might ultimately be too soft for your needs, but there are other manufacturer’s out there using similar rubbers that may be more appropriate. If you want to inquire more, a good source of information is the Adhesives and Sealants Council www.ascouncil.org, (http://www.ascouncil.org,) who might offer a more suitable adhesive.

Hope it works,
