Some true stories are so unlikely to be true that the story teller is reluctant to tell the story, rather than be thought a liar. This is one of those.
I've been canoe fishing for a while and have enjoyed it thouroughly, but when I see the yakkers loading and unloading without breaking a sweat, I decided to look into buying one.
Due to my age and strength, I knew that I needed to go light. I quickly learned that the lighter a yak is, the more expensive they become. Being on a fixed income, I have a shoestring budget for fishing toys.
I finally found an elcheapo yak for $200.00 on the net. Called to place the order and found that shipping would be $275.00 for a $200.00 yak. No way!
I had seen some canoers using kayak paddles for canoeing so I decided that if I couldn't have a kayak, I could at least have a yak paddle. Went to a local yak shop to price a paddle. Cheapest one they had was well over a hundred bucks. No way!
The next day, I went fishing and had paddled up a small creek to castnet some bait. I hadn't paddled more than 50 yards up the creek when I saw something floating on the water several yards ahead of me. As I got closer, I realized that it was a brand new yak paddle. The bar code sticker was still on the blade.
I used my newfound paddle to go back out to the main channel. After about 2 hours of slow fishing, I loaded up and decided to go back to the shop and try to talk myself into buying a 450.00 yak.
I was talking to the salesman and mentioned the yak that I had found for $200.00. He said that he had talked to someone else that had just bought the same yak and avoided shipping costs by ordering it from Boaters world and having it delivered to the store instead of his home.
Went back home and ordered it. It's being shipped as I post this and I can hardly wait.
P.S. I play once a week in a Texas Holdem poker tournament(play money, of course), and, yep, you guessed it. First place out of thirty some players that same night.
Now I'm just waiting for the other shoe to fall.LOL
