Bill, I need one that doesn;t require a lot of work. I'm building a master B/B on the house and have a bout 30 other irons in the fire. What I want is a trailer that can carry four yaks, a box on the bottom for carrying paddles, PFD's, and some fishing equipment. One I buy set to go is going to need some modification to it, but at least it's ready to roll on the get go. I've looked for trailers to convert with very little success. Also I have no welding abilities available, and Supplies for corss braces are expensive. Then the whole thing needs to be coated well. Think the powder coated new ones will do well. Love to see what you have or suggestions ou offer though. Anything to save money is a good idea. S
Requirements....four yaks, flat; box on the bottom for supplies, minimu 5 ft long, trailer weight less than 250 pounds. Yaks up to 15 ft long. S

Look at www.trailex.com (http://www.trailex.com) I got the one that can hold 500#/4 yaks. All aluminum with all connection by t-bolts and channels - very easy to put togehter and/or modify. Only thing I want to change is that it came w/ 8" wheels - I think for highway travel I would want to replace with 12". Although the trailer as is did very well on the trip from PA up to the Cape. Price was about $900

Hey, Swanny - I been following your posts since we got back. Sounds like you been having some real good days. Let me knoe when Ed & I should plan a trip up - sure would like to get into the albiew and skippers. Summer doldrums setting in down here - smallmouth/panfish seems to be the only show in town, but no to bad on flyrod. Don't catch them all before we get a chance to hook up with you.

Buying or Building........... I think you made the right move buying a small trailer.
I was a union sheet metal worker "tin knocker" for 15 years and a pretty good welder/shop guy. I was off once for 3 weeks in 15 years.
A few years ago when I priced out building a "U" trailer for myself. Which included getting the steel, angle iron, etc. at cost and being able to fab it in a fully rigged tin shop.
Not even including my time ! It was cheaper to pick out a nicely fabed well built one..............done. For about $500.00
Buy a hitch & go !
I could see it when you get into the $8000.00 H.D. Trailers but not a utility or yak type trailer................just my 2 cents after making a material list of parts etc. B.I.

Scott, By the way the wife & kids are love'en the SOT's paddling, swimming off them etc and just having a blast. My wife and I took the Tandem "Cabo" for a quick float tonight. That thing moves ! and it moves easy with two. (nice fishing rig for two & fun) I would like to see a picture of a yak trailer. Maybe I will make some mods to my "U". Right now I throw the tandem on the Cherokee and the solo's in the "U". Do you have pictures Scott/ Bill W. ? B.I.

I've about had enough of this fun game called "trying to put three yaks on top of the camper shell on our truck". I've been thinking about a trailer and would love to see what others have done. $250 and $450 got my attention.
Scott? Bill? Pics anyone?

My favorite part about a trailer is that you can have the kayaks fully rigged and ready to go. Its especially nice when you move to a new location, should the first not work out.

OK, here's trailer info of the one I got. The real reason I got it is I came across for 50 bucks less than anywhere else I could find. I also got a 2 foot extension incase I get a bigger yak. I'm towing this with a geo prizm, so size was a consideration.
Why a trailer. Five yaks, four people, stprage when not yaking, always ready to go when I;m ready. Will add a system to store a lot of fishing stuff on it and it'll be ready to go when I am.
Price...375, shipping 109, extension 47. Worked out to be 50 plus bucks off anyone else. They're on ebay, seems to be a bit of a pricing war going on.

There are lot's of trailers, and you can spend a lot more. But for me to go eight miles with four yaks, it's two cars, or a trailer. I also need the ability to store the yaks when not using them. This should work well on both accounts. S

Bill I, glad to hear they are popular with the family. Seems to make new folks less inhibited about using them. The kids instantly seem to see them as pool toys and not traveling machines. It's a family thing and that makes it a good thinghttp://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif S

Does anyone see a problem with parking these kind of trailers on streets of certain towns, like Deal in Jersey or the Sandy Hook parking lots are we allowed to have them?

they have it on Cabelas for $200.00
Even though our ATV Folding Trailer offers a large 34" x 68" bed size and heavy 800-pound capacity, it conveniently folds to a compact 34" x 25" x 34" (with wheels attached) for easy transport in the back of your pickup or SUV. Trailer is also pre-drilled and includes the mounting hardware necessary for attaching 1/2" plywood decking (not included). Puncture-resistant 3-1/2" x 10" tubeless tires, tough 5/8" axle and 2" hitch-ball coupler.
The Trailer Stake Pocket Kit includes 12 pockets for quick attachment of 2" x 2" sidewall supports (not included). Comes complete with mounting hardware

Marksharky, I looked at several of that style trailer, ie just a bed. But after you start looking at what you're going to use for holding th eyaks, structural integrity, performance, looks, it really adds up quickly. Would work well for a single yak, but for four....what would you use to hold them? S

I was just thinking it may be good for me as I only have 1 yak right now, may get 1 more for the kids in the future. What was really on my mind was I made one of the really large igloo coolers into an aerator and I thought maybe this would serve both purposes well?

Mudsharky,
I have a similar trailer as the one pictured made by the Long Trailer Co. down in NC. You can find similar models around if you dig deep. My trailer has a "flatbed" where the one you pictured has a bed. I built some cross bars that rise up 36" and have saddles on them. I normally travel with two yaks. They go up, gear in totes goes down, Move some gear and use "J" saddles and you could easily carry 6 yaks. Last year camped out on Lookout Seashore, NC., for four days and was able to have everything(and stuff I didn't need)because of that trailer. $500.00 and my tow vehicle is a Hyundai Elantra wagon. I use that trailer for day trips too. It's just easier.

Jut saw that trailer in Cabela's and it's advertised as a ATV trailer/ But you can get 4x8's for 300 ish dollars. It's just the superstructure that begins to get challenging. If you;ve got home mades, please post some pictures. S

It is a ATV trailer made for pickups and SUV's , I would need a 2" hitch ball attachment to fit in my Envoy hitch & a 2" ball mount, I would also get the 2x2 side wood kit add some cross bars and j straps like mutt boy suggested.... I think I may go with this, would love to be able to lock a nice large cooler to it and keep the back of my truck clean http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Sorry, I thought it was meant to be towed by an ATV. That would make it perhaps a bit light duty for the road. Go for it!!! S

Mark, much better. Again,. the only hang up I had was creating a durable support system for four yaks. I wanted it metal, had thought of PVC, and it had to stand up to a FnD and highway speeds. Let me know what ideas you have. The trailer I'm getting will be fit with 8"d x 12ft long PVC pipes to hold rods, A small box integrated into the base for tackle amd voila, off to the races. S
May try to go to 12" PVC to put paddles in on one sidehttp://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

There appear to be two dealers. One includes shipping the other adds it. The one that adds it is working out to be about 50 buckish less. I got the 375, 109 to ship and added a tongue extender. Worked out to about 525 ish. S
