I made this "thing" a long time ago in anticipation of the snapper season that never materialized for me. I left the zonker strip a little longer to cut back if need be and maybe I should have used red thread instead of white behind the jiggy head. What else could I have done? You guys have any little flies for snappers? Any pics?

It's all wrong!!! http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif It's upside down!!! When using a jiggy or cone head the hook point will ride up when in the water. So flip that $ucker around and you got a fly that will work just fine. http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

I put a wing opposite the hook point! Won't this make sure the point rides down? http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Did you put a little life preserver on it to make it float head up? S
Yak, Yak, Yak...is that all I do?

OK Ed lets look at the big picture. If anything if it doesn't ride point up it will definitely ride side saddle. http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I like it. It's kind of like an Sparkling, jig head blonde.
Maybe bright or hot orange instead of red thread behind the head and silver flash and silver body instead of gold. Not sure if I would use the zonker...blues like their meals served fast and if the fly is presented properly the zonker material will never get the chance to "breathe." Not to mention that they will shorten that strip before you get the chance to clip it back. I would use some white bucktail with a little more flash tied in.
Stan...the only reason a jiggy rides point up is the bucktail (a hollow hair) tied hookside. The hairs buoyancy couters the hooks non-buoyancy. The jiggy head is uniform in weight around the shank and does not contribute to the hooks direction. If you created a jiggy fly using only hook and the jiggy head...it would ride point down.

stan, I'm confused. http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif Help me out my brother. This is my thinking, which, could be way off but here goes. Isn't the cone's mass distributed evenly around the shank? Then the added weight of the bend/point would make it ride hook point down? no? The original jiggies are tied with the wing on the same side as the point, allowing the fly to ride point up. I thought the wing position was responsible for them riding hook point up. Anyway, Ed nice fly you could touch that white throat up with a dab of red from a marker. I like the white throat though. Another trick I like is to use a staight piece of 50-60 lb mono, burned into a ball at one end, to prevent rabbit tails from fouling.
The jiggy fly has the materials tie exclusively on the same side of the hook as the hook point. Opposite of what mrsinbad has created, FWIW.
Have kayak, will travel.

Flies for snappers = small surf candies. If pressed for time = tie some flash on a size 2 hook and go!

The coneheads Ed is using are heavy weighted if they are the same ones he bought at the fly show in Jan. So if these are the same they which I think they are the fly will ride either side saddle or hook point up because of the bunnytail tied in at the hook bend. Now if Ed had only used bucktail the hook point would then face down with the bucktail tied ontop of the shank. But the point I was trying to make is if your trying to tie a jiggy fly than tie it right. Bucktail should've been tied onto the bottom of the hook shank so the fly would ride hook point up like it's supposed to do.

Hey, thanks for the suggestions guys... I think the quick fix is to take out the red Sharpie...
Swanny, the pic is not clear, but I do have 50# mono burnt to a nail head (not ball cause I mashed it down on the stove top) just at the point there the zonker takes a bend.
Stan, yep, these are the jiggy heads I bought with you during Sommerset. I'll tie this pattern point up, a little more traditional next time.

Do point up flies hook fish as efficiently as point down flies. Point up they would have to better in weed?

quote:
Do point up flies hook fish as efficiently as point down flies.

Absolutely Yes!!! The Clouser Minnow rides hook point up and it's a hugh fish catching fly.

I can't see in not catching, I think you have to use the fly and then tell us what it looks like in the water. I always try out new flys in the water when things slow down, fast strip and slow strip. I usually cast it at my fishing partner and get his opinion on how it swims and the general overall appearance. Not all flys work and these usually end up on my desk to be cut up and then recycle the hook. Take it out and cast it, view it and report back...your own observations will be more critical.
Sit back and enjoy the ride!
