I went to west lake (sheridan st.)yesterday for the first time, actually it was my first saltwater kayak fishing experience. After throwing numerous bananas in the water, i finally was able to net 1 finger mullet http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif . I trolled around for about 2 1/2 hours( I cant believe how long that thing stayed alive) enjoying the views until i got hit by what i think was a cuda( my line was sliced up). Is there anyone that fishes there on a regular basis that can offer some tips? Tides, techniques, types of artificials? Anything would be much appreciated. I also wouldn't mind hooking up someone sometime. Thanks! Aj

Aj...I have kayaked more than fished West lake..Its a great paddle around there. However I am sure there is a Snook bite there..I have worked the incoming tide near the feeder creeks that go into the intracoastal. Spend some time working the mangroves there. It is most likely a decent area at incoming and at first light.
Myself and Capt Jim worked there one day and had a few hits on topwaters...I think you need to spend some time...work the areas at the right tide and something should happen!
good luck...Chef Mike http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

I agree with Mike. West lake is tide dependant, and right now should hold mean ole Snook. And rather than troll throw your stuff into and under the Mangrooves.

Aj, I fished there Saturday night. I put in at the smaller bridge around 11pm. Spent and hour waiting for mullet to come through, caught bait and headed out. Fished the west side all the way to Holland Park and into the ICW past Hollywood Bridge. Thought for sure I would killem. Had a couple of small cuda hits all night and part of the morning. There was absoulutely no activity on top other than the schools of mullet I came on to. I really didn't troll much, instead drifting and pitching a freelined mullet. I did see some good sized tarpoon chasing bait in the ICW near some of the bars and nightclubs along AIA. Did'nt try to catch their pets. I couldn't beleive the lack of activity in the park. It got to where I just sat there and listened. Nothing.
Tried the east side on the way back, nothing. Tried plastics, topwater, everything but dynamite. I know their in there. Got back to the bridge about 6 am dead beat. Decided to wait around for sunup and see if things would change. Nope. Stayed till 8:30 am.

If it's not to windy in the morning I think I'll get some mullet and head offshore, Dania Beach.

On Sheridan, went back out this morning, didn't try the ocean..... no bait at the pier. They haven't been catching much of anything off any of the piers. Put it at Holland park this morning and fished the mangroves with plastic baits. Caught small baracuddas only. Caught mullet and went back into the feeder streams, caught nothing. The fishing must really be good during my work hours....4pm to 11. http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Chefmik,
The mullet are in there thick. I watched a continuous school of finger mullet for over an hour, from the Sheridan Street bridge last week. I saw the bait fly out of the water only one time. I may be back out there again myself. I have not tried north of the bridge....you like that area better?

Iconn...The north side seems to be a bit more fishier.
I will be working around the North side and the entrance to the ICW...be there around 8:30 am .

Hey everybody,

Long time no see/post. I haven't fished WL yet but I've paddled it some. I've talked with people who've fished it and the consensus was snapper were pretty abundant.

Sure looks like there'd be fish. Has anybody tried the shallow, oyster bar area on the North side?

Nada..Ziltch...Nothin!!
Met up with LConn today and we fished the north side of the lake. Not much going on..very little bait action.
Worked into the intracoastal and headed down to the power plant area..fished a couple spots in there and nothing. Not even a hit!
Worked our way back against the tide from hell!!!!
Got some great excercise!!!
Luis...nice meeting you.
Im still not gonna give up. http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Not that I've fished there yet, but after a bunch of paddles there here are some areas I'd like to hit when I do get there:

South side:

if you launch in the park and follow the trail out to the lake there's a little trail towards the end, heads off to the south. not far in is an oyster point (I stuck myself on it)

crossing the lake to the trail on the east side (green?) that area in there i've seen fish (don't know what they are). it's a real shallow creek with the occasional pool

in the main lake, the west side shoreline before the bridge

North side:

go to the white pole where it marks the huge oyster bed/shallow and work around the edge

in the mangrove creeks go for snapper

in the middle of the horseshow island

the west side of the northern part of the lake, there's the creeks/canals which go back quite a ways

Again, I haven't fished these but I've marked them in my head as places I want to go back to. Anybody tried any of these areas? I'm assuming nobody's had any luck...
