Somewhat embarassing but perhaps you guys could give me a solution. I typically fish inside waters but last week was trolling a few hundred yards in the ocean off of long island through some sand bars and cuts. After the sun got hot enough and with a bit of a decent swell i started getting a bit nauseous (as in mal de mer)...didn't get terrible but enough to have me head back in and drain all the fluids i had brought with me. In the past when boat fishing off shore I have used over the counter medicines such as dramamine with some success (sometimes I'm fine and sometimes not...go figure). My concern is taking one of these medications while engaging in an activity that involves as much energy output as kayaking does. Any ideas? thx

These work pretty well for mild seasickness.
My wife used them for morning sickness with both of our kids. She swears by them.
There are various resources online for them. They also sell them on cruise ships to help queasy vacationers.
Seasickness is a physiological phenomenon. It will happen to anyone when the conditions are right.

BONINE!! I get seasick looking at a boat. I told my wife I could feel the swell in the ferry to M.V. at the dock , still moored , when the ocean had a 1'swell !!! I for some reason don't get sick in small boats or in rough water , just the slow up and down of a big boat like a party boat. BUT i tried some BONINE , which touts that it is better than dramamine with less drowsiness and I can say they are 100%right. the only draw back is getting your sealegs back on dry land. It kinda hits you later and you feel a little woozy. But I tried dramamine, the patches, the bracelets, other pressure point devices, and other wacky ideas but this is the only one that worked for me.
I usually take 2 or 3 TUMS and it works great. http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

I have taken a lot of folks offshore chartering in the past. If you take any of the OTC med's, most are antihistimines and may make you drowsy. Should not be a problem on a yak as you are to busy to be affected.
The biggest thing to remember here is to take them ahead of time. Once your ill.......to late.
I fished with a guy for 5 years offshore before I knew he was taking the stuff. He was fine with, a wreck w/out.

The Patch...Transderm V, a prescription medication your doc can write a script. Like a bandaid, you stick to the area just below your ear on a blood vessel to have it feed the medication in slowly over the day. Greatest stuff in the world, doesn't make you tired or give dry mouth. JoeB?????? this is your chance to so show us some of the book lear'n you've been do'n in skool.
Sit back and enjoy the ride!

Antivert (meclizine) is a popular drug that is available by prescription. i too suffered from the same exact problem when i was yakking. I used to not eat anything before i went figuring i wouldnt get nauseaus but it was quite the opposite. eat something and be well hydrated BEFORE you go out there.
Antivert (meclizine) is the active ingredient in NON DROWSY DRAMAMINE. (check the back under "active ingredients) 25mg works fine for me but i have seen and taken 50mg at times. and THERES NO DROWSINESS!!!
good luck and tight lines.
