View Full Version : Tube & worm question

I always have problems fishing the tube and worm. I use a barrel swivle, 2 feet of leader then the tube that has another barrel swivle at the head of the tube. Thats 2 barrel swivles. Regardless i always end up twisting my line badly and end up discarding 50yds of mono. What are other people rigging? Could it be the reel, or the line? If I use my boat rod, 6ft Penn slammer with a Penn GTI 310 with 25lb berkley big game line, I don't have any problems. But this rig is awfully heavy for yak fishing. My utility rod, an 8ft St.Croix (med-hvy)with a Penn 704z loaded with 20lb Yozuri hybrid is the problem rig. Is it the spinning reel that is causing the problem or the line. I also carry by schoolie rod a 6ft Berkley med wt, with a Penn 5500 and the PowerPro super line. I don't feel comfortable trolling this rig, as its pretty light and I have been spooled in the past. What are other people using, and do you have the same problems.

I'm using a Penn 5500 SS with a 8" Ugly stick and have caught many very large bass on it(30+ lbs). Try padeling your yak at a good clip and then cast backwards. Reel in a little and then put the rod away. Paddle a little more and then check your line to make sure that it is not fouled up on the rod. If you make this mistake, you can break rod / tip over / break rod holder and alot of other bad stuff.

you have to use a rudder, you can do a search on "rebuilt tube and worm rig" to see the pictures of the set up....We sell the rudders
I add a good quality snap swivel to the swivel in the head of the tube and use one on either side of the rudder. Also seems to improve the action.

My rig consists of a barrel swivel at the nose of the tube, short leader to snap swivel at plastic rudder, snap swivel on other end of rudder to main line. After a few hours trolling, the line still has some twist in it. Since I only get to fish a few or so hours at each outing, it not a big problem.
However, before heading out for the next trip, I take that snap swivel on the main line off the rudder and clip it onto a small diameter object and walk out a few hundred feet of line and stretch it. As I reel in under pressure, the line straightens itself out while freely spinning at the snap... http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I looked at the photo, thanks, I have been fishing in the salt for 25 years and have never seen such a rig. (tube-br. swivel-leader-br. swivel-snap swivel-rudder-snap swivel) no wonder the line doesn't spin. Is there a different name for the rudder. Where can I purchase one on the north shore?

Hey Grhorne last time I was in wal mart in Derry New hampshire they had the rudders for sale in the fishing department. If there is a wal mart closer to you take a look, if not you can find them in Derry if you want to take a ride. Dan http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

The rudders aren't an easy item to find. They're very hit or miss. That's why we carry them in our online store.

grhorne; How do you feed your line out of your threadline when setting up for a troll? Back off on the drag? If that's the case, that's your problem. If you don't open up the bail arm to do it you'll get line twist very quickly. Each time I hook up on a decent size fish I have to get rid of the line twist on my Shimano TSS4 (only happens with threadlines). It's pretty easy though. Just cut off your terminal tackle, feed about 50 or 100 yards of line out into the water as you paddle along, set the bail arm and paddle for about 5 minutes. She'll be good as new until the next screamer peels it off again.

I cast out and flip the bail open to desired length. When you talk about leting 50-100yds out and paddling, are you trolling anything, explain.
PS I try to aviod Walmarts at all cost!!

We don't want to be a tackle store but we do carry hard to get items as a service to our members. Nothing worse then learning about something and then not being able to get it. That's why we have the rudders and items like Breakaway clips, etc.
Also we try to get hard to get items when requested too even though they're not listed. If there's something you can't find, ask, as you never know.

Today I shipped 11 orders. Sure takes time putting them together and then I had to place a bunch of orders. http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif Its a tuff job but someone has to do it.

I got the rudders at Walmart last nite. Few questions. Does the rudder stay on the surface? will this keep my tube up near the surface. Does anyone use small lead shot on the line to bring it down a little. How far is the rudder from the tube? I will test it out tonite as I am heading out after work. I will be fishing from 6-dark, hopefully of the Rockport coast unless the swells are too big, then off to the Gloucester harbour. Anyone interested let me know. (FishinRay or Ahab)are local it think.

I USED to live in Rockport, about 3+ years back. Typically, I go back there are least twice a year and fish some of my favorite spots in the late summer and early fall. Hope you do well.
You won't need much wait, if any when trolling in water 8' or less. A small egg or bullet weight will help it get down some if you're fishing deep water (Halibut Point, the Headlands, etc).
Best worm color: red (though black, and a new favorite bubble gum, do the job at the appropriate times and places...)

grhorne, if you don't like the big wally-worlds, you should check out this shop.
GRANITE STATE ROD & REEL
6 HOLBROOK DRIVE
NASHUA, NH 03062
Phone:603-880-6031
Don't know if they have rudders, but the shop is in his house and he has quite a variety of tackle for a small shop. I found him when I was looking for a St. Croix dealer.
I really don't think that color matters. I've used a few. Its an attractor and then they smell the worm. Its important that the tube spin, other then that I haven't found out much of a difference.

Thanks, I got the rudders. I braved the mutant crowd at Walmart (my apologies to anyone that works there). I am relitivly new to the Nashua area and don't know the local bait shops, but we have 3 of every other store you can think of. I set up 2 rigs yesterday at work, (working hard) and left them in my gym bag. So I trolled Yozuri swimmer into the mouth of a nice 24" striper last nite. Whats the deal with the water temp. My thermometer read 54 on Sunday and 74 last nite.

i hear a lot about the tube and worm. Since I mostly fly fish, where can I find info on how to set up this type of rig?

Do a search (top of the page under Post a Reply and type in "rebuilt tube and worm rig". I shows a photo that you add a sea worm to the hook and troll it slow. The tube spins and replicates a eel. I have caught several big fish on this rig, but haven't had any luck since I purchased my yak, which tells me I need to work on my trolling speed. In a motor boat the trick was to troll very slow and close to the rocks. I am still experimenting on paddle speeds.

Well I went out fishing last nite (friends grady white) and tested my new rudder system. It worked like a charm. Thanks to all the contributers. No stripers but plenty of dogfish!
