View Full Version : My Quiver
The fleet as it stands now...I'm very impressed with the qualities of the Swing, though I am still pondering how best to store tackle. I don't really like the idea of the milk create in the tankwell. I am planning on doing some surf launches during the Fall and think that it could make for a messy landing with three Plano boxes scattered along the wash.

I store my tackle box, a cooly that contains 5 600ml water bottles, a diver's watertight case with my camera and cell phone in it, a couple of towels and a tupperware bait container... all in the rear hatch.
A few people seem to think the 10" access hatch is too small but it just means you've got to be a little bit creative when it comes to the size of the items you want to fit in there.
mrmom thought the Perception hatch frame and cover was a bit pricey (AUS $135.00) but apparently there are a few after-market hatches that will also do the job?
Definitely worth the effort.

Joe,
She sure looks sweet. Take a look at Billybob's for ideas. Catch anything yet? BTW, how does it compare to your other yak?

I agree, a 10" hatch is in order here...I'll be adding one shortly. http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I typically carry three small plano boxes for tackle, so it's not much at all and I know they fit through a 10" hatch already (my Explorer). But I would anticipate that they would be difficult to locate in the hull as a result of shifting during a days fishing. If I could come up with a way to tether them somehow (like with the interla pulley system I have on the Explorer) so I could pull them to the hatch opening, that would be ideal.
Any thoughts?
mrmom64-
Just one Sea Robin from the Swing thus far. http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif The Swing blows away the Explorer in terms of speed, gliding ability and overall paddeling efficiency. However, the Explorer has it beat hands-down with respect to the hatches and storage below deck and maneuverability. But all this was anticipated and expected! No sense in owning two kayaks that perform identically. I think the Explorer will get it's fair share of freshwater action on the small streams and lakes up here and the Swing the majority of the saltwater trips.
I do like the layout of the deck as it seems very condusive to adding accessories, with lots of flat space behind the seat and on the center rib between my legs. Still have some work to do on her before she's in tip-top working order. http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Joe: Anything you put in the rear hatch simply has to be at least 4" high and 8" wide. That way it fits easily through the 10" hatch but can't slide beyond the rear hatch area. I use a cloth tackle bag to carry my Plano tackle box and one tupperware container (top and bottom) and a few other odds and sods... it pads out to just over 4" high so it can't slide under the seat or through to the front... no need to tether.
I think there are a few of these style of tackle bags on the market that will take two Plano boxes.
My cooly bag is the same... 8" by 6"... fits easily through the hatch opening but can't slide out of easy arm's reach.

Joe: Just had another look at my yak. The bases of the flush mount rod holders I've mounted behind my seat actually block off either side of the internal 'tunnel' to a certain extent.
Makes it even harder for objects to slide away from the rear hatch area... an unintended bonus.
billybob@fishingnoosa.com.au
Funny you mention flush mounted rod holders, as I was thining about this same thing last night after looking at the picture on this site of your rigged out Swing. I also didn't realize at the time I posted this that the recessed tankwell aft of the hatch should do well to keep items from shifting to the back of the kayak. Another added bonus to the Swing!
Now I just have to keep "bending the truth" to Kristy that I am not "cutting tons of holes" into the kayak before she gets a chance to have some input as to what accessories go where. http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif Technically, I am only a 50% owner of the new kayak, as we splint the initial costs. http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Billybob, we're still a tenth of Joe's total posts and yet he's the one who's supposedly going to medical school. http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
Now I would like to know where he gets the time to fish, customize a yak, go all over the place and stll do an incredible number of posts?
I think he never sleeps.
My diagnosis: Yakfishing obsession. Contagious and disruptive. See, he is trying to spread the disease to his own brother!
God help him. http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

You're good. http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif I think your diagnosis is right on. But don't I get credit for being such a great time manager to be able to pull off all of this and still get my M.D. in less than one year (HOLY S#$T that's scarry)

So long as I get to cut up and customize the kayak, I'll be OK. I just need to make sure I have a flyrod holder on the Swing--even though Kristy doesn't fly fish. Yet. http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Joe,
If you haven't found out already the 10" hatch is really cheap (around 20 bucks). I carry a spare just in case. By comparison the 8" hatches on an OK are 34.00. I want to find out more about billybobs hatch covers.
I've adjusted to the hatches and even get rods in there. I have a rubbermaid insulated cooler that fits into the TW perfectly. I've also used different boxes in the TW, all of which have sealed lids. If I put a latch on it it would hold up to a surf roll.
Where'd you find a green Swing?
Someday God will explain the universe to me ... while I'm waiting I'll go fishing
Santiago II-
I am kicking around the idea of putting in one of the Cobra 10" round hatches with the bucket as the aft hatch (are these "viking hatches"?) as I like the idea of being able to keep lures and flies very accessible on the water. The center hatch (if you can even call it that) on the Swing is worthless, except to put a pair of pliars and some leaders/tippet material. Maybe a small disposable camera as well, though I know my digital camera (and case) does not fit. http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
The waterproof plano storage box fits nicely in the tankwell and I have it rigged up with bungee cords and attached to the kayak so it's not going anywhere on a surf landing.
As far as where I picked the yak up from, check out the Buy/Sell Forum here. I jumped on the kayak when it was posted for sale like white on rice. http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Joe: With the Swing hatches you've just got to be creative with the size of your containers. That 'worthless' centre hatch is where I store nearly all of my favourite trolling lures for quick and easy access.
I found a plastic container (rectangular) in my local dive shop (it had swim goggles in it originally) and it takes roughly half a dozen of my best lures... which is more than I need on any trip. I also fit a tube of 'catch scent' in the hatch along side of the lure box... and there's still room for more... just haven't thought what yet.

I agree with billybob about the center hatch. I put almost everything I need in there. I also carry stuff in my seat back. I also have pliers and a knife in a CKF sheath on the center console. I would go with the rubber hatch. That will give you the maximum access. I put 10" tires in there with very little effort. You can put an 8" viking hatch in the cutout but the 10" viking hatches are too big/too small for that spot (unless you have one of the older Swings). I happen to have 8 and 10" Vikings (only 1 left of each). The cobra hatch is essentially the same with more holes around the edges. If you want to see how they measure out you can borrow anything I have. I also have a spare 5" center hatch with an extra large catbag.
We have to set up a date to fish and look at all the accessories (I think I have them all including the sheathes, paddle holders, and extra RAM tubes.
We have to talk!
Someday God will explain the universe to me ... while I'm waiting I'll go fishing
SII-
Yup, it is an older Swing (1998). The rear hatch-space looks like it can easily accomodate a 10" hatch. The center (4", 5"??) hatch is a screw-off type, with a mesh bag underneath. Just a few more accessories to add at this point. A flush mount rod hold, a Scotty base (for the flyrod), and the small RAM ball for the FF. The three of us (including Scott whenever he gets back from where ever he is) should get together and Ooo and Ahhh over the Swing Armada.
So, when are we fishing? I have Friday off this week (I think). I was kicking around the idea of going back down to LI (again) this weekend, but nothing's set in stone...though the Sirens are callin' me back to the salt...
The little voice inside my head is telling me to stay here and study for the Pediatric clerkship exam I have on 7/18.

First you have to talk to ScottO about pediatrics. He runs circles around all but the best local pediatricians. I've seen him outdiagnose specialists with weird pediatric disorders.
Second....STOP! Before you put any flush mounts in the Swing remember that the Swing is probably the most watertight boat available. You can mount screws thru the hull without compromising it but I'm not sure about the flush mounts.
I was just in Albany this past weekend. I'll have to drop off all the possible accessories and let you look at them all before you decide what you want to do. If you're driving past Kingston anytime in the near future I could meet you at the exit.
If you have a raised area for the rear hatch cover it might be tough to put in a 10" Viking hatch there. There's a drain channel around the edge that gets int the way in the newer models.
Also, I'll email you pictures of my old Swing and the accessories (it's almost identical to my new Swing).
If ScottO hadn't mentioned it, he's got two Swings now and will be busy outfitting the new one when he gets back from OBX this weekend. You guys could compare notes.
I'll try to add a picture to this post just to see if it works.

It cannot be help, my friend. I just receievd a new jig saw as a birthday present and it's just sitting in my closet waiting to chew up some green plastic kayak. What can I say, I'm an accessory whore! http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif
I take it you're not a fan of the flush mounted rod holders, eh? I mounted two on the Explorer and find that they come in handy on the water.
I'm going to be holding off for the time being before cutting up the kayak. Kristy is 50% owner, so I want to make sure she's in agreement on the locations for all the items (I'm good like that).
PS. Recognize the yak?

JoeB,
I'm going to switch the Ram tubes on my Sea Dart to flush mount but not on the Swing. Mainly a practical decision.
So how come your file pictures fit on the BB and mine don't?
By the way the sailor in that boat looks a lot better than the kayaks owner
Someday God will explain the universe to me ... while I'm waiting I'll go fishing
You have to reduce the file size of the image to 50K or less. If that's not the issue, then I'm afraid I can't help, because that's all I know about posting pics. http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif
