Its seems like the new harbor master at Hudson Park (a short paddle from Glenn Island) is a kayaker and will have a dock built for kayak launching this coming season and word is that it will be open 24/7.
I will keep everybody posted. I am sure you guys wont miss climbing fences like we have done in the past to launch.

24/7 will be very nice. JOey's checking on it but there might be an inspection process. That means that certain gear will most likely be required as to safety items. When JOey knows for certain he'll post.

I'm more into launching the FnD than lifting it! I'm interested in this as well since the Glenn Is trip was such a blast for me.
Sit back and enjoy the ride!
This was emailed to me by someone about the launch.
I am responding to your e-mail letter forwarded to my attention by
Councilwoman Selin, Councilman Bramson and City Manager Strome regarding
kayaking in our city parks.
As you already know per our previous discussions, last season my department
designated the municipal marina property "on a trial basis" as the location
for waterfront kayak/canoe access to Long Island Sound. That experiment was
fairly successful and will have further modifications and a more suitable
designated access slip space this year.
Kayaks and canoes will be launched from a newly designed dingy dock on the
Hudson Park side of the marina property adjacent to the Police Harbor Patrol
dock. This will enable kayakers to paddle along the sea wall and across the
beach towards open water with minimal boat traffic. All kayaks/canoes are to
be inspected, fees charged and permit's will be issued along with a key to
the docking facility. Preliminary plans are in the works to create storage
fro kayaks/canoes later this year.
This arrangement is the most secure, safe and accessible option for all
recreational water enthusiasts, especially since the marina is manned 24-7
during the season and has ample parking. I hope you will spread the word on
this new service amongst your fellow kayakers and I wish you and yours a
very enjoyable recreational experience. For further details, I encourage you
to contact our Harbormaster, Sal Gugliara at the marina office @ 235-7339 or
235-6930, I know he is eager to assist.

That answers one of questions. I was in there early the day SteveL got us all off the hook at GI. Hudson didn't look like a place to leave the car 24/7. I guess we wait for the 2nd question which is whether permits are for county residents only.

It may be that they are for New Rochelle residents only, which could exclude me as well.
But, New Rochelle does sell to them outsiders, I think.

I called city hall. You need an Omni card. They are issued from city hall (Parks And Recreation) $30 resident, $45 non resident. This is a City park so your passes for Glenn Island do not apply. http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif
Thanks Shamus.

PASS WILL ALSO BE GOOD AT FIVE ISLANDS PARK, ACROSS TEH CHANNEL... GOT TO HAND IT TO NEW ROCHELLE, BY THE WAY: THEY ARE THE ONLY ONES OF THE WESTCHESTER TOWNS TO PROVIDE PUBLIC ACESS TO THE SOUND.

I'm working Larchmont and Mamaroneck. I found that councilman Noam Bramson of New Rochelle was a Kayaker from his bio on the new rochelle city website. Started writing him and other members of the council. Thats how I found out Hudson Park. You get enough people to email the council members and something is bound to happen.

I spoke to the habormaster there and the set up will not be exclusionary and everybody will be able to purchase this omni card which will enable them to park and use the launch. He also said that every kayaker will have to show that they have all the required safety gear. I am going to meet with him in the next couple days becasue he wanted some ideas on building some kayak racks.
BTW.. Steve I gave you that sticker last year for your car, well that is your omni card and i think its good for another year.

Joey, get a list of all the safety gear we need to carry for launching from their dinghy dock.
Also, suggest the yak racks should support the yaks along the length and not across the width of the yaks (like sawhorses) so these supports don't leave (serious) indentations in the yaks during the hot summer days.

Good point Sin....I think that going 6 inches wide on the supports might be wide enough to not cause any damage.
BTW My hats off to Shamus for actually taking the time to make calls and write letters about getting some launching facilities. One time I did the same when they closed the local strip club-I gave city hall a piece of my mind! Imagine closing a strip club just because it was near a school http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Joe... as I've said before, you are 'da man... Even if you can't catch fish in spanish-speaking countries. I think you should have brushed up on the language. http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Let me know if I can help. THis is something worth working on in the winter months.

I heard from TV a long time ago about something George W said before his first trip to England. It went along the lines of having to study up on the country and learn some of their language... http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I was looking in the archives for access to the LI Sound in CT or West Chester county and found these postings on an access area in New Rochelle. Does anyone know if this is still on schedule to be opened this year and what the safety requirements are? From where I live in upstate NY, this is the closest salt water for me. Thanks.
I posted in June about this, but no one responded. Has anyone heard what became of this kayak launch park in New Rochelle?

They did build a launch there, but it really never worked out that well, you have to get a pass to launch and then you need a pass to park. Its very tough to get a kayak down the ramp to actually launch there. I would go to glenn island, its open to all this time of year.

Joey, are you sure about GI? We keep hearing they are still checking permits.
I'm not sure where you mean about the proposed Mamaroneck launch. The one we used on Sunday was about a 20 minute paddle to get out of the harbor. Do I really want to commit to leaving my yak in the same place for the whole season? Just a thought.

DOES ALL THIS MEAN THAT NONE OF YOU HAVE ENJOYED THE THE CHARM AND CHALLENGE OF THE OF THE L DOCK
AT HUDSON PARK. I DID IT ONCE WITH THE CANOE, ONCE WITH THE KAYAK AND THEN JUST LAUNCHED FROM GI. THANKS FOR YOUR EFFORTS JOEY. WILL LOOK FORWARD TO IT NEXT YEAR.

I really cant believe they are still checking permits at Glenn, I would say we are in the clear now. Yea that Mamaroneck paddle out of the harbor is a kinda long, but I do love that area right outside. This time of year the fish are no longer around the structure-its all about chasing the bird and bait around, it has not happened around here yet, trust me it will, I just hope the weather holds up so we can go and get em.
