i have a chevy trailblazer, and when looking to buy roof accessories to add to my factory crossbars, i find there aren't any. do i really have to buy a new base rack system and then accessories, or will any fit.

When I had my trailblazer I bought a yamika rack to replace the cross bars that were there. Thule makes them too.

Take a look at the Malone racks - I've used the Big Foot racks on my Grand Cherokee for two years with no problems - they attach directly to the factory bars - I've used them to carry an Ultimate 12 and Ultimate 14, hull down

maybe i misunderstand. when i go to the yakima/thule/malone websites, and use the fit guide, i find that i have to completely replace the existing rack with a new system. It doesn't seem that i can simply buy, for example, the Malone Sea Wing carriers. None of the carriers seem to attach directly to my factory bars. Should i consider going ahead and buying a carrier, and if it doesn't fit well, then back up and replace the factory bars. I'm rather new at this, and would like things to be as simple as possible. Thanks for everyone's help.

Yeah that's the way I did it I replaced the cross bars bought the yakima towers for that particular suv and was able to install the yakima bars after that. All you use from your original rack is the side rails.
The malone is something you may want to look t f you don;t want to rplace your bars
