I figured it was timely to have a chat about live lining. So how do you guys approach it? Do ya snag and drop? If not, how do ya hook ‘em (mouth, dorsal, tail)? How long do ya wait before setting the hook? Do ya use weight? What else?

I’ve mixed it up quite a bit myself and think I’ve learned that results can be quite misleading. Some days a certain approach works great with hardly any misses while other days that same approach misses 5 in a row leaving you wondering what you’re doing wrong.

What I usually do is to give snag and drop a try. Once that bunker hits the bottom I give it a min or two and if there’s no take I bring her in to put on my official live lineing pole (6’ 6” trevala w/a calcutta 401te). I put a 10/0 gamakatsu through the roof of its mouth being careful not to put it too deep. I figure when you set it you’re far better off if that hook easily rips out of the bunker’s face… and that flesh is tough in that area. I usually go for the roof of the mouth ‘cause I often troll them around a bit and things seem to work better that way. I also start out with 2oz weight on one of those Quick-Slide sinker slides and move to no weight if nothing is happening. Now when I get a take, I give it at least 10 seconds, in some cases more before pointing my rod tip down, letting all the slack out and setting pretty much as hard as I can!!!

I've tried a number of other things, but that's my "normal" routine.

What works for you?
