In Hawaii natives believe that their "aumakua" personal protector takes the form of a shark. In the 1920's a woman was seen having a row of dots tattooed around her ankle as a charm to ward off shark attacks. The back story was that the woman was bitten by a shark " her aumakua " when the attack occurred she cried out to the shark you are supposed to protect and guard me, the shark let go and assured her he would never make that mistake again because he would see the dots left from the attack. That is why my wife and i have dots tattooed around our ankles. So our "aumakua" dosent eat our asses when we kayak.
