I installed a trolling motor on the back of my kayak and used the plug shown in the attachment. I used 10 gauge wire for all 4 wires from the trolling motor to the switch mounted on the front of my boat. The 10 gauge wire was extremely difficult to stick into the receptacles of this plug and they have come loose several times. Does anyone know of a good 4 wire marine plug to use that is not huge?

I can't offer up anything specific, but Marinco and Hubbell make some decent watertight plugs and connectors. You could do a Google search and see what you come up with. Some of them are not cheap though.

The plug looks like it'll work but it's only rated a 5 amps if I remember correctly, Your asking for trouble. The plug will fail, Marinco only has 2 and 3 wire plugs. Contact Bassyaks, they have modified plugs which can handle the 10 ga. wire and the current that you will be encountering

What did you end of using for a plug, I am in the same situation.. I am so glad I saw that the other plug you used did not work, I was going to order one.
Thanks |

I really don't like the Marinco plugs for a kayak. They have to be lined up to be inserted and then twisted to lock them in place. It's difficult to get the female installed so it won't twist when you try to lock it in and to keep it from twisting in the other direction when you try to pull the plug out. The standard trolling motor plug and recepticle you get from BPS or Cabela's work just fine without the twisting problems.

KenL,
What you mention about the marinco plug is quite accurate in my experiences. I get a very slight twist/play (maybe 1/8" at most) when locking/unlocking the plug. It hasn't caused any issues but I am consciously NOT rough when plugging/unplugging. |

I just ordered this plug. I think I might get a rubber stopper for the receptical as it does not come with a cap. It will set you back $60 plus shipping, but it is definitely thick enough!!
