One of the largest and most beautiful lakes NJ has to offer, Split Rock offers a wide variety of activities to the outdoorsmen. Great fishing, recreational kayaking/canoeing, and swimming are just a few of the activities possible. The reservoir also has a couple of hiking trails, the longest being a 13.8 mile loop. The reservoir has a population of smallmouth and largemouth bass, as well as catfish, crappie, sunfish, perch, pickerel and bait fish. Anglers can expect decent fishing for bass, crappie and chain pickerel in the reservoir. In 2003 a larger parking lot (A) was constructed and there is easy access for the kayak fisherman. When I traveled across the lake I was greeted by a few kayakers and they said that the fishing here has been great this year. They said most of their luck was near the island. The Island is located in the back part of the lake and really isn't visible because of the bend in the lake. Going around the left side of the island is easier, but the good fishing seems to be on the right side where schools of bait fish and many large mouth bass were clearly visible. I must point out that there are some fallen trees that you will have to be careful about when going around this part of the island and it gets quite shallow, but it will pay off. I personally recommend this place to anyone with a kayak or canoe regardless of which activity you want to do.
