Anthracite Outfitters trip summary and report: 11-08-09

Eddy Rider and I hit the road to Sunbury last Saturday. We had two things to accomplish. First was to get a "maiden voyage" in for Anthracite Outfitters' latest addition to the fleet, a Native Mantaray 120.

The other goal was to work the inflatable dam area in Sunbury on the Susquehanna river and get in on the fantastic walleye fishery that area has. The water level was up and the dam was deflated for the winter, however the structure was sweet. It became clear with the flow rate that we were going to have to paddle out and wade the areas we needed to hit. Under normal flow there are a series of islands exposed, but in our case they were covered so we had to find them.

The bite was slow when we first got there, and at sunset we got off the water, and redirected to work the rip rap shoreline and rapids into the evening.

Eddy Rider drew first blood on the night bite with this 16" walleye.

Shortly after that I hit a 30" eye in the rapids.

Eddy Rider wound up hitting one more 18" eye, pictured in the first image of this report.

All in all, a great run south, and we got to fish with John "Toast" Oast of fishyaker.com, as well we met up with Metzger who is a member of the www.kayakfishingstuff.com forums. This area is Metzger and Toast's home waters. Metzger hit good fish and one may see his report from the day in KFS' Pa. forum.

Last, Eddy Rider, Toast, and I ate at a rib stand right by the Sunbury launch. It's name is "Billy Bob's Hillbilly Bar-b-q". That food was by far and away the BEST ribs, pulled pork, bar-b-q sauce, and beans I've ever had. If you ever run to Sunbury to fish check that food out. It's off the charts.

Stay tuned, as Eddy Rider and I will be working our home waters this Friday, and we'll see what the river has in store with this weather.

Tightlines and safe paddlin'!!!
